Sen. Obama has a long history of using the phrase "I am my brother's keeper." He says that that principle has helped make America work - and it has, but it's not because the government was ever anyone's keeper. In using this phrase he's courting evangelicals and trying to put a new face on liberalism. But let's not forget what it really is: justification for more government programs and income redistribution a la It Takes A Village.
Obama seems to be confusing the role of private charitable work with the role of the federal government. He's also suggesting that I have the obligation to pay for the health care of someone 1000 miles away I don't even know. While personally he and others certainly have the right to live by that philosophy, we don't need the federal government being anyone's "keeper." In other words, I don't want Obama taking more of my money to give it to whomever he decides. That's my decision.
